Anthony J. Szumowski Jr. 1942-2025

Anthony J. Szumowski Jr., 83, passed away at his home surrounded by his loving family on December 18, 2025. Born in Holyoke on September 28, 1942. He was the son of Anthony and Jane (Badger) Szumowski. Tony grew up in Easthampton, he was a graduate of Smith Vocational High School in Northampton. He enlisted into the Air Force and served for over 22 years with a distinguished career, retiring as a Master Sergeant. Some of his many other jobs included a driver for Richard’s Oil, and also as an insurance inspector adjuster. He also was very happy to work at Westover Air Force Base managing the supply chain.

In his spare time Tony enjoyed playing cards, especially with his group of friends.


His life also centered around church, Our Lady of The Valley where he dearly loved his Polish Heritage, enjoying polish food and polish music. One of his favorite past times was cooking especially his homemade chicken soup. Tony had a love of cars; he began at a young age working with his father at his car lot in Easthampton. He enjoyed restoring cars throughout his life. One of his favorites “Was his Kaiser Classic Car” taking it to many shows and winning several trophies. He also enjoyed his family spending time with them going camping, especially to Vermont and Maine.


Anthony was also a member and a past Commander of the Patrick McCarthy Post VFW3422.

He was predeceased by his father and his mother, his wife, Denise (Belanger) Jones.

He will be dearly missed by his children, Mary Jane Szumowski of Kimberling City, MO, Joseph Szumowski of Windam, ME, James (Jennifer) Szumowski of Denver, CO, his stepchildren; Mark (Rosemary) Gaudreau of Clearwater, FL, Richard (Lori) Gaudreau of Westfield and Michael Gaudreau of St. Petersburg, FL, Linda Gaudreau and Julie Gaudreau also of Holyoke.


He was predeceased by Debbie Szumowski, brothers Robert Szumowski and Thomas Szumowski, his sister Marion Soutra and also his step son Kevin Jones. Tony considered himself so lucky to have many grandchildren many great grandchildren and several nieces and nephews, who he all loved dearly.


Tony’s funeral service will be held on Saturday, December 27 with a calling hour at the Boucher – O’Brien Funeral Home from 9 to 10. Proceeding to his Funeral Mass at 11am in Our Lady of the Valley Church. He will be honored at a later date with burial receiving full Military Honors in Arlington National Cemetery.
